There lived in the town of Yaroslavl two sisters & their magical cat. The sisters lived in happiness, training their cat in the hopes of one day performing in the Moscow Cat Theater. When a mysterious stranger arrives, everything is thrown into chaos, & the sisters must spin tales to save their precious pussy. But in the Cat Circus, not everything is as it seems. & the cat has his own purrformance in mind.Weaving together Russian folklore, live music & animal acrobatics, Vera & Valya & The Magical One Cat Circus is a new kind of Furry-Tale.
About the Artists
Olivia McGiff is a theatrical and visual artist living in Brooklyn. She received her B.A. in Drama from Vassar College, earning the Molly Thacher Kazan Memorial prize for distinction in the Theater Arts. She has collaborated with companies such as Portland Stage, CAP Stage, and The Debate Society, and is an associate artist with One Year Lease Theater Company. She is actually more of a dog person, but don’t tell Nadja!
Nadja Leonhard-Hooper is an actor, director and writer who lives in one of the Ukrainian diners in the east village. She recently graduated from Vassar College where she studied theater, political science, and gender/ sexuality studies. This year, she’s worked as an assistant director with One Year Lease Theater Company, as a production associate with I AM A BOYS CHOIR and the Foundry Theater, and as an assistant director at La Mama. Next year, she plans on making work in New York and Berlin.
Liesl Schillinger is a New York–based literary and theater critic, translator and moderator. She studied comparative literature at Yale, lived briefly in Moscow, where she wrote for The New Republic and sang at the Arbat Blues Club, worked more than a decade at The New Yorker, and became a regular critic for The New York Times Book Review in 2005. Her articles appear in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, Vogue, Foreign Policy and elsewhere.
Kelly Schuster is a theater-maker and educator who spends much of her time playing pretend with children. She loves to light shows live so she can be as present as she hopes to be when performing/teaching/lucid dreaming. Her favorite shows to light have been “blu” by Virginia Grise, “The Way of The World” by William Congreve (directed by Kim Wield), and “Cabaret” with the Cat Circus ensemble. She has worked with Theater Mitu, Portland Stage, One Year Lease, the Brooklyn Arts Exchange/BAX, and received her BA in Drama from Vassar College. Patrick Brady spent the fall in Japan, eating ramen and touring with Disney on Classic, where he played LeFou in Beauty and the Beast. Favorite roles: Ui, The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui; Marcus, Titus Andronicus; Dennis, All Shook Up; Ensemble, Attempts on Her Life; Feste, Twelfth Night. Sarah Traisman is an actor, writer, and theater maker. She graduated with a degree in Drama and Psychology from Vassar College last May and completed a season with Santa Cruz Shakespeare this summer. Recently, she performed in The Bacchae at La Mama and has been exploring film work as well as writing her own material. Sarah has had over 20 feline friends since the age of zero.
Jeremy Brick is a recent graduate of Vassar College, where he received a degree in drama and economics. Since graduating, he has done administrative work for Beautiful: The Carole King Musical on Broadway and currently does theatrical general management work at the Charlotte Wilcox Company. He is excited to get back to performing and working with incredible artists!
Devin McDuffee was born part of a litter of six. He enjoys long naps, licking errant hairs, and chasing his own tail.
Zach Leatherman works in the New York Theater Workshop Box Office and sells glitter & plastic hair at Halloween Adventure. Most recently, they designed the makeup for the Manhattan Opera House’s production of Mozart’s The Magic Flute.
Tessa Permar trained for a season in Israel with Kibbutz Contemporary Dance Co and the National Theatre Institute/Eugene O’Neill Theatre Center. Most recently, Tessa directed a production of Hair that raised $8,000 for a local nonprofit. She blends influences of Capoeira, Droznin, and stage combat with her classical modern dance background.
Jane Cardona just finished work on Deployed (written by Natalie Lovejoy), Misery (Broadhurst Theater with Michael Friedman) and St. Joan (The Public Theater written by David Byrnes, directed by Alex Timbers). She spent the past two summers working as the Cabaret Intern (with Kris Kukul and Cody Owen Stine) at the Williamstown Theater Festival, where she also worked on Unknown Soldier (with Michael Friedman) and Posterboy (with Craig Carnelia). She has a BA in Music from Vassar College, where she received the Frances Walker Prize for the greatest proficiency in the study of piano.
Frank Driscoll is a director, writer, actor, and visual artist. He recently graduated from Vassar College with degrees in Drama and Religion. He has directed many plays including Aloha Say the Pretty Girls, Leviathan, and Cabaret for his senior thesis. He has worked at director Garry Marshall’s Falcon Theater, collaborated with the Troubadour Theatre Company, and coached young theater makers at Brooklyn Arts Exchange (BAX). He is currently writing and acting in a comedic web series and working on a collection of paintings and drawings for an art show at BAX. Frank loves cats, despite being severely allergic.
