Utensils-plus-21st Century Faggot: Movement towards Worth BREAKTIME-plus-Shelton Lindsay

Utensils

Created and performed by Jonathan Matthews and Holly Sass, co-founders and artistic directors of BREAKTIME

Utensils navigates dynamics between familial roles in an absurdist, protean character study generated and abstracted from a handful of loved ones’ answers to a questionnaire about their parents. Performed by a male and female, their embodiment of these roles aligns and subverts gender assignments, blurring relationship participants into particular desires to be loved along with particular strategies by which to achieve it.

BREAKTIME is a site-fluid reservoir for bad ideas, generated and performed by Holly Sass and Jonathan Matthews, classmates in NYU Tisch Dance’s class of 2014. The pair joined creative forces in 2017 to participate in Tisch Dance’s Alumni Choreographic Workshop under the mentorship of Gus Solomons, Jr. Since then, they have been presented in a variety of spaces by UNA Projects, Liberty Hall Dance Festival, Home Audio, Center for Performance Research, and Dixon Place. They are currently Artists in Residence at Chez Bushwick.

Jonathan Matthews graduated NYU Tisch Dance with a music minor. He attended Salzburg Experimental Academy of Dance, Toscana Dance HUB, Springboard, and the International Theatre Festival of Kerala. He performs with ChristinaNoel & The Creature, The Little Streams, Darrah Carr Dance, and choreographs for This is Not a Theatre Company. He accompanies at Tisch, composed for Rashaun Mitchell, and music directs for the Medicine Show Theatre and Queens Shakespeare, Inc. He has written for Eye on Dance and the Arts, Journal of Dance Education, Time Out NY, and Dance Magazine. Jonathan co-founded BREAKTIME.

Holly Sass holds a BFA in dance at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, where she performed work by Crystal Pite and Kendra Portier. She has worked with LoudHoundMovement, Gallim Dance, 10 Hairy Legs, Ashley Robicheaux & Artists, Lone King Projects, the Merce Cunningham Trust, 2nd Best Dance Company and UNA Projects. She is currently studying massage therapy at Pacific College of Oriental Medicine and biodynamic craniosacral therapy at Stillpoint. Holly is a co-founder of BREAKTIME.

21st Century Faggot: Movement towards Worth

2018.07.18_SheltonLindsay___ Photo_ Magnus_Hastings (2)

Exploring the idea of worth through 6 ‘movements’ Shelton looks at how we (the queers and the outsiders) construct our own identities and how those constructs grant us power. By telling real stories blended with song, dance and clown performance Shelton looks to uncover how claiming and expressing self worth can be a radical and magical act in contemporary America. With hints of surrealism and a whole lot costumes changes, this is 21st Century Faggot: Movements Towards Worth.

Shelton Pritchard Lindsay is a writer/performer/director and designer living in Brooklyn. He is a  co-artistic director with the New York Neo-Futurists, head of design at The House of Yes, and a member of the clown collective FOU FOU HA. Also catch him in seasons 1 & 2 of High Maintenance on HBO.
