Carlos, an actor, is prepping for a performance as Algernon, the fabulous prankster and ‘Bunburyist’ from Oscar Wilde’s classic masterpiece The Importance of Being Earnest. But he gets caught up between the world of Wilde and his own past, fumbling through memories of his twenties spent reading and camping with his very own college friend, Ernest. A funny, sad, and ultimately touching monologue addressed to an imaginary Ernest, The Importance of Ernest tracks Carlos/Algernon’s confusion about identity, performance, and memory.
About the artist
Carlos Dengler is a freelance writer and New York City actor and musician. He has written for n+1 and Seven Stories Press and is working with Foundry Literary + Media on writing his first memoir. Carlos has performed a one person show for Fringe Festival and understudied for Josh Radnor at Lincoln Center Theater. He received an MFA from NYU Grad Acting in 2015, appeared live with the Late Night with Seth Meyers house band in 2016, and was the founding bass player and keyboardist for the band Interpol from 1997 to 2010.
