lil BLK ~PLUS~ Wreck Class Safe Space NIC Kay ~PLUS~ Ashley Yergens
About This Show
lil BLK is a live experimental solo performance, influenced by New York City gay/queer ballroom culture, live punk shows, butoh and praise dance. In this performance NIC Kay wrestles with their desire to be seen in a society that seeks to control and crush the black feminine body. They attempt to highlight the traps of being a black queer performer searching for freedom on the stage and in a beat.
‘‘Safe space’’ is often used to describe a space where a marginalized group is free from mainstream stereotypes and social exclusion. With abrupt and sometimes problematic transitions, Wreck Class Safe Space holds up a mirror to queer nightlife events, working class family gatherings, and the contents of our proverbial closets.
