Black Artists’ Matter is a variety night celebrating the work of Black Artists from across the country. Come and experience an eclectic and electric evening of music, theater, comedy, and more.
Donations will be split between the artists involved, and Integrate NYC, a youth-led organization advocating for racial integration and equity in NYC schools (more info here: https://www.integratenyc.org)

About The Artists

Tyler Tanner is an NYC based actor. Past work includes: The Stray (Rebel Playhouse), 33 and 1/3 (Dobama Theatre), Next to Normal (Tantrum Theatre), Shakespeare in Love (Orlando Shakes), It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play (Orlando Shakes), Showtime with Shakespeare (Orlando Shakes), A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Shakespeare by the River). Training: Ohio University BFA (2016), Orlando Shakes Acting/Education Internship (2017-2018). Tyler is also a proud member of AEA.

Jason Williams is a NY based performer most recently seen as “J-man” in the original musical “Other World” and  “Jesse” on the Broadway 1st national tour of “A Bronx Tale.” This Maryland native and University of Maryland graduate has been performing professionally for the last 15 years in National and International tours including “Dreamgirls” in South Korea “Madagascar Live!” In the UK and China, and regionally in shows including “Tarzan,” “Smokey Joe’s Cafe,”and “Chicago.” 

Hawa Sako is a NY native whose brooding and melancholy melodies contrast with her mellifluous timber to convey a sense of saudade. She is part of Browni, a musical duo whose sound is defined by mysterious electronic vibes, authentic R&B rhythms, and compelling melodies. Kovey’s R&B inspired electronic beats complement Hawa’s alluring vocals capturing their typical party pessimism. Check out Browni’s last EP: Highlife, Low Expectations

The Sumlin Family is based in Cleveland Heights, Ohio. Eugene and Nicole Sumlin are actors, directors, singers, choreographers and educators. Easton is a sophomore at University School and has performed at theatres such as Cleveland Play House, Heights Youth Theatre, Tantrum Theatre, and Dobama Theatre. August is in the 6 th grade and has performed at Great Lakes Theatre, Cleveland Play House and Heights Youth Theatre. The entire family performed together in Children of Eden at French Creek Theatre, and in Minton’s Place at Cleveland Play House, which was a part on the New Ground Theatre Festival in 2018. This year, they were invited to remount their original piece entitled Beauty for Ashes at Station Hope, produced by Cleveland Public Theatre. Through storytelling and music, this piece tells the joys and hardships found within their family history.

Khalid Taylor (he/him) is a queer Afro-Latinx performer, documentary songwriter, speaker, and life coach based in Bethlehem, PA originally from Brooklyn, NY. He graduated from Oberlin College and Conservatory in 2017, majoring in Music and Cognition. After transitioning from work in higher education, at 24, he recently founded Life Liberated, a business centered around personal growth and development for individuals and the communities they are a part of. He has a deep passion for liberation, healing, creative connections, and helping others build better and happier lives, which he intends to do for the rest of his life.

Nikomeh Anderson (they/he) is a multidisciplinary artist, a mover, poet, musician, performer, healer and collaborator. They are focused on liberation and anti-oppression work internally and with community.

Christen Anne Dekie is an Actor, Writer, producer and an Alumni of NYU Tisch School of the arts. She has performed in Dreams in Black Major curated by a magnificent duo, TA-NIA (Talia Paulette Oliveras and Nia Farrell) at Ars Nova and The National Black Theater as well as PRAYby niche Douglas. She is currently a production assistant at PowerHouse VFX, a Post-Production Company in NYC. Her current projects include : Producing her first short film, Kaleidoscope, collaborating in “A Diaspora in Self-Isolation: Black Women during the Covid-19 Pandemic” project and she is also a co-host on a mini-series called Black & Ivy that centers around black life in predominantly white institutions/campuses. 

Amara Granderson is an actor from Brooklyn, NY, currently based in southern California.  A graduate of Oberlin College (B.A. Africana Studies) and UC San Diego (M.F.A. Acting), she is reorienting herself with what it means to be an artist in times of a global pandemic and sociopolitical upheaval.  She is grateful for her loved ones, especially for her family on the east coast.  She hopes to be reunited with the east coast as soon as they Defund The Police <3

Maya T Jones is an actor, director, and writer native to Cleveland, Ohio. Her work focuses on healing self and community via truth and reconciliation. She has worked in many capacities on and off of the stage. She most recently appeared in Panther Women at Cleveland Public Theater, a virtual production. She has appeared in notable productions on stages across NorthEast Ohio including Ensemble Theatre, Karamu House, Dobama Theatre, and Convergence Continuum. Maya will begin her MFA graduate studies in the fall.

Ananias Dixon is a theater teacher and coach at the Cleveland School of The Arts, Cleveland Play House, and a full time teaching artist at Playhouse Square and has also been a member of George Street Playhouse’s educational touring theatre. Theater credits include Sunset Baby, The Effect, An Octoroon (Dobama Theatre); Detroit 67, Julius X (Karamu House); The Good Heart,  Rastus and Hattie, The Claxson Family, How to End Poverty in 90 min (Cleveland Public Theater); Black Angels Over Tuskegee (Actors Temple); John Henry (Cleveland Play House); The Toilet (New federal theatre).  TV/film Includes “Law and Order: SVU”, “Blue Bloods”, “Person of Interest”,” Boardwalk Empire”,” Upstairs”, “NYC 22”, Antwone Fisher, Home_, and Criminal Activity. Ananias was also part of Cleveland Play House’s New Ground Theatre Festival as the AD for The Nolan Williams Project as well as AD for The Royale under the direction of Robert Barry Fleming.

Olivia DeToma (O) is an indie singer-songwriter based in Los Angeles. She originally hails from the DIY rock scene of Massachusetts and Rhode Island, having spent time performing, writing and recording with Delko, a four-piece post-rock band based out of Providence. She is thrilled and proud to share this space with other BIPOC artists, even if it is from a distance for now!

Ty McKinnie, is an American singer-songwriter and self-taught guitarist from Atlanta, Georgia. The Atlanta native has been singing since the age of 6 years old, and since then, music has been the center of his life. Ty started writing music and uploading songs to SoundCloud and covers on YouTube. Inspired to turn his passion into action, in 2016, Ty moved to New York City to pursue his singing career and enrolled in New York University’s Music Business program. While he wasn’t in class, Ty continued to work on his craft, releasing two EPs and performing in iconic venues around New York City. He has recently graduated from NYU and is now working on his next project.
