About This Show

The Iron Mule is New York’s longest-running short comedy film festival, screening monthly since April 2002. Before they were famous, Stephen Colbert, Dan Harmon, Aziz Ansari, Lena Dunham, Seth MacFarlane, Abbi Jacobson & Ilana Glazer showed their films at the Iron Mule. But we don’t care about famous names — the Iron Mule is a fun, accessible festival, where filmmakers & film fans can meet & mingle. The festival is hosted by filmmaker Jay Stern and filmmaker/comedian Victor Varnado.

Glenn & Connor Move a Couch – directed by Gary Hersey
There are aliens in the sky, the world is about to end & Glenn & Connor need to move a couch.

We Were the Donner Party – written & directed by Cynthia Kaplan
A documentary short/music video in the style of Ric Burns as a child on crack.

Love and Let Live – directed by Michael Mercadante
Two people hide from a deadly killer & quickly discover that there is only one way to survive: they must find true love.

School of Fools – directed by Allan George
When a power-suited motivational speaker is confronted with his epic delusion at the ‘School of Cool’, he finds himself lonely, without hope… or a muffin. From New Zealand.

Till Jail Do Us Part / Hasta que la celda nos separe – Written & directed by Mariana Emmanuelli & Joserro Emmanuelli
Their love and deep religious belief drive a criminal couple to kidnap a priest to marry them before they are captured by the police. From Puerto Rico.

Mobspeak Institute – written & directed by Daniel Mahon & Greg Peduto
After a gangland rise & fall, a puppet mobster starts a school for criminals.

At every Iron Mule festival, a randomly selected audience member is selected in the ‘‘Wanna Be a Star’’ contest. part of the Iron Mule “Wanna Be a Star” contest where we randomly choose an audience member from the previous screening to star in their own movie. January’s film stars audience member Antonia Marsh.

Filmmakers from We Were the Donner Party, Glenn & Connor Move a Couch and Love and Let Live will be in attendance.

About the Hosts

R.J. Lewis, a working professional for over 40 years, R.J. was in the Broadway show Barnum where he did magic, sang, danced & juggled.  He also appeared in Busker Alley, starring Tommy Tune.  His recent television appearances include Law and Order.  The Today Show & Season 3 of The Apprentice. He played the lead in the film Beyond Belief, which won 7 awards, & was lead actor & producer of Down in Flmaes, which has won 10 awards.

Jay Stern has directed and produced over 30 short films & directed over 20 theater productions. Jay’s first feature film The Changeling opened in NYC in 2007. His second & third features, Spirit Cabinet & The Adventures of Paul and Marian are currently seeking distribution. Jay is a founding member of the World Wide Lab, a collective of international theater directors dedicated to creating director- collaborative work. He most recently co-artistic directed this year’s lab on the island of Syros in Greece.

Victor Varnado is a writer/director/actor/comedian who just can’t get enough slashes in his description. As a comedian, Victor has appeared on Conan O’Brien, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, HBO & Comedy Central. As a filmmaker, Victor has been a gun-for-hire script doctor & has worked on films for Disney, Lion’s Gate & independent film companies. Acting, What?! Sure Victor can act. He has appeared in some of the worst Hollywood films ever made with Eddie Murphy & Arnold Schwarzenegger, as well as some interesting independent films with people like David Carradine.
