A Dixon Place Benefit screening of: SHELF LIFE Starring O-Lan Jones, Andrea Stein and Jim Turner
The never-released, undiscovered final feature film from legendary director Paul Bartel
Hosted by Cole Escola

About THE FILM

Shelf Life is dark comedy based upon a theatrical production of the same name that was conceived and written by O-Lan Jones, Andrea Stein and Jim Turner as a result of their rumination on what must become of people boxed in tiny spaces for extended periods of time. Director Paul Bartel saw the closing night performance of the play in 1992 and within six weeks begun shooting the film. After decades underground, the last remaining 35mm print has been uncovered at the film archive of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, just in time for its 25th Anniversary. In Shelf Life Tina, Pam, and Scotty are taken down into their parents bomb shelter after the Kennedy assassination in 1963. Thirty years later, after their parenets have died the now-grown kids have created a life for themselves based on remnants from the 60’s, intermittent output from the TV and their wild imaginations.

MEET THE CREATIVE TEAM

Paul Bartel is best known for his unconventional, subversive style– his films as provocative as they are sophisticated. After his early work at Roger Corman’s New World Pictures (including directing the cult classic Death Race 2000) he went on to write, direct and star in his 1983 breakthrough cannibal sex comedy Eating Raoul (recently released through The Criterion Collection).  In total, he made nine feature films which went on to play internationally at renowned festivals and cult midnight movie theaters alike. Since his untimely death in 2000, Bartel’s work as both director and comedic actor has been celebrated around the world, praised by Hollywood luminaries such as Steven Speilberg, Brian De Palma, and Martin Scorsese as well as his many colleagues on the fringe– Jim Jarmusch, John Waters, Joe Dante, and Allan Arkush, to name just a few.
