About This Show

PUPPETQUEERS NYC is an evening of short form adult puppet theater made for the queers (and their allies), by the queers, exploring beyond the binaries of puppetry.

An offspring of the Chicago-born PUPPETQUEERS, PUPPETQUEERS NYC is a PWYC (pay what you can) and DIY puppet slam event dedicated to uplifting and celebrating queer artists working within puppetry. From long-standing puppeteers to those new in the scene to those who may be experimenting with puppetry as a form for their art for the very first time, PUPPETQUEERS offers a home and a stage for all of them. PUPPETQUEERS also often features an element where the audience can contribute meaningfully to the work.

Doors at 7PM /Show at 7:30PM. Arrive early for a bonus activity! Please note that MASKS ARE REQUIRED. Thank you for helping us keep each other safe.

The theater at Dixon Place is down 1 flight of stairs and is accessible via elevator.

About the Curators

Victor Ayala (he/him) is a Brooklyn based puppetqueer, fabricator and performer. He is also a serving board member of PGOGNY: the Puppetry Guild of Greater New York. He encourages anyone who finds joy in puppetry to reach out and join their local guild. Previous work includes: ‘Song of the North’ (Kingorama), ‘PackRat’ (Concrete Temple Theatre), ‘Manufacturing Mischief’ (Tank Theater), ‘Sweeney Todd’ (Eugene O’Neill Theater Center). J Hann (they/them) is a puppetqueer, fiber artist and puppetry director. J’s unique textural work draws inspiration from the past and is centered in the weird, wonderful and whimsical. They have been a resident artist at Governors Island, The Object Movement Festival, and an Emerging Artist at the 2022 Eugene O’Neill Puppetry Conference. Their work has received support from the Jim Henson Foundation, The New York State Council for the Arts and Two Chairs Inc. J’s performance work has been seen on big and small screens and at St Ann’s Warehouse, BAM, Dixon Place, The Tank, La MaMa, and in venues around the globe. They are an Artistic Associate at Concrete Temple Theatre, and a fabricator with Official Puppet Business. www.jennyhann.com IG: jhannham
Ash Winkfield (xe/xem/xyr/they) is a multidisciplinary artist working primarily in theater and the puppetry arts. Winkfield specializes in new and devised work presented in New York City, and has toured domestically and internationally with Basil Twist (Rite of Spring, Book of Mountains and Seas), The Walk with Little Amal, Shake on the Lake (The Othello Project, Mxbeth, Henry V), and Josh Rice Productions (Kayfabe). They have had the great pleasure to perform in several projects that have been developed as part of La Mama’s Jumpstart, St. Ann’s Warehouse’s Puppet Lab, The Floating Tower, and the Object Movement Puppetry Festival. In 2024, Winkfield was a featured vocalist in Yaa Samar Dance Theater’s World Premiere of Gathering in New York City. They are currently the Artistic Associate at Puppetshowplace Theater.
