LENORA CHAMPAGNE

Lenora Champagne presents the NYC debut of Hat Trips!

In Hat Trips, the personalities, desires and frustrations of a few hats are interspersed with reflections by the woman who wears them. Without ever saying so, the work addresses the “invisibility” of older women. Domestic routines and the threat of violence underlying daily life are evoked; animals both tame and wild show up to offer solace or elevate anxiety. Audiences are enticed to consider serious concerns through the hats’ antics and predicaments.

A long-time writer, performer, and educator, Lenora Champagne’s awards include fellowships from the New York Foundation for the Arts in playwriting and performance art and from the National Endowment for the Arts in solo performance and directing. An alumna of New Dramatists, she received a Fulbright to Japan 2012-13 and has been a resident artist at MacDowell, Yaddo, Bogliasco (Italy) and Dora Maar (France). In ’20 she received the inaugural commission from the Katherine Owens/Undermain Fund for New Work; Undermain Theatre produced her play Feeding on Light (Dallas ’22.) She has developed several solos and longer works at Dixon Place over the years.

Champagne’s publications include New World Plays (NoPassport Press), Out from Under: Texts by Women Performance Artists (TCG), and The Singing: a cyberspace opera in Epic Plays II (collaboration w/composer Daniel Levy; received the Richard Rodgers Music Theatre Development Award from American Academy of Arts and Letters). Her solos have been published in PAJ: A Journal of Performance and Art, Performance Research, The Iowa Review, to name a few.  She is Professor Emerita of Theatre and Performance at Purchase College, SUNY and taught for many years at NYU’s Gallatin School.
