About the Choreographers


New York Dance Project presenting “Imaginary Dances”, Choreography by Julia Bengtsson
AND presenting “TKO”, Choreography by Tyler Gilstrap

Swedish-born dance artist Julia Bengtsson has choreographed over 20 ballets, operas and films for venues including Carnegie Hall, UN Headquarters, Bruno Walter Auditorium at Lincoln Center, and Alvin Ailey Dance Center. Her stage direction of Opera Lafayette’s production of Venus and Adonis was praised by The Washington Post as “a fine evening’s entertainment”.  She has performed and presented workshops at Stanford University, Temple University, NYU Steinhardt, and University of Pittsburgh.  She is a graduate of Royal Swedish Ballet School and was a scholarship student at Joffrey Ballet School.

Tyler Gilstrap (Danville, VA) was a founding member of Battleworks Dance Company (2001-2010). Her credits include associate choreographer for the Sochi Winter Olympic Games Opening Ceremony, assistant choreographer for the film; ‘Love And Other Drugs’ , the Italian San Remo TV Award shows and the opening ceremony for Pope John Paul II at Yankee Stadium. In 2019, she was the movement director for the “Infinite Hotel” as part of the Prototype Festival NYC. Over the years she has choreographed music videos for innovative musical artists such as Andrew McMahon, Son Lux, Skyes, and FireHorse. Tyler founded the creative production company TunanuT in 2014 , which has created events for Panorama Music Festival, Figment Festival NYC, The Blue Bus Project, Big Data’s fall tour 2015, Un(Scene) Art show, Ballroom Marfa, The Feast, and The Windmill Factory. As a dancer, Tyler has been featured in such films as ‘Across the Universe’, ‘The Wackness,’ and the Italian TV show ‘Amici.’

Thomas/Ortiz Dance Presenting “Sacra Du Printemps, (The Decision)”, Choreography by Ted Thomas

A native New Yorker who receiving his B.F.A. from the State University of New York at Purchase. He went on to earn a Masters degree in dance and higher education from New York University. He danced with Ballet Hispanico, Elisa Monte, and the Murray Louis and Nikolais Companies prior to joining the Paul Taylor Dance Company in 1996. While choreographing and continuing to perform with his own dance company Thomas/Ortiz Dance, Mr. Thomas was for two years Artist-in-Residence at Barnard College. Mr. Thomas is the 2018 winner of the Connecticut Artist Fellowship for excellence in Dance and Choreography.
