Amai: Maze Gate Andrew Maillet & Zbigniew Bzymek

About This Show

Andrew Maillet (Amai) presents a concert of original songs from an in-progress album. Rendered in simple piano arrangements, the songs – written in New York, Warsaw and a farm shed in Virginia – draw from experiences in and around the theatre, quiet refrains against the commerce of self and sense.

The concert includes video and narration by Zbigniew Bzymek, positing “surface comparisons” to Glenn Gould, the famously introverted pianist to whom Andrew has been told he bears a likeness. Real-life arguments and well-tempered melodies lose power in an abstract fractal maze where opposites meet their ends. So many problems – which can we afford to leave unsolved?

About the Artists

Andrew Maillet and Zbigniew Bzymek met while channeling ghosts on the set of The Wooster Group’s ‘A Pink Chair (In Place of A Fake Antique)’. Previous collaborations include ‘Xenophilia’ (Jack Brooklyn), ‘Pragmatists, Or Use Me’ (The Performing Garage, NYC & DAS Space Teatr Powszechny, Warsaw), and the New York component of the international livestream event ‘The World Reads Kochanowski’ (NYU Skirball Center). They have recently developed projects incorporating VR and AR technology with Dream Adoption Society in Poland, and are slated to create an experimental reading of Kafka’s ‘Ameryka’ at Teatr Studio in Warsaw in the Spring of 2020.
