Military equipment of the Second World War: Vickers Mk E Light tank

Vickers Mk E Light Tank

Description of the structure

At the end of the 1920s, the need to equip troops with modern tanks of domestic production became obvious. Since Poland had no experience in building tanks, it was decided to purchase a license abroad. This decision marked the beginning of the service of the Vickers E and 7TP light tanks in the Polish army.

The prototype

A sample of the 6-ton Vickers-Armstrong light tank, also known as the Mark E (Mk. E), was built in 1928 by the British Vickers-Armstrongs Ltd. on its own initiative. It turned out to be one of the most significant tank developments in the history of the creation of this weapon. The tank was developed in two main versions: Mk. The E Type A (variant A) was twin-turreted, armed with machine guns, and the single-turreted Mk. The E Type B (variant B) was the first tank to be armed with a cannon and a machine gun connected together in a turret ("duplex installation").

Although the British army did not order a new tank, it was exported to many countries (mainly Finland, China, Siam, Bulgaria, Bolivia). Most of the exported tanks were used in combat. The Soviet Union produced more than 12,500 licensed tanks under the designation T-26, developed in several versions. Many other tanks were modeled after the Vickers 6 Ton, especially its suspension. This also led to the creation of the Polish 7TP tank.

Combat use in 1939

In August 1939, during mobilization, the Vickers tanks were divided between two light tank companies of two motorized brigades:

The 11th Tank Battalion mobilized the 121st light tank Company for the 10th Cavalry Brigade (motorized).
The 2nd Battalion mobilized the 12th Light Tank Company for the Warsaw Armored Brigade (WBP-M).

The light tank company consisted of 16 tanks (10-11 single-towered and 5-6 double-towered). Each company consisted of a commander's tank and three platoons of 5 tanks (a regular company). Most likely, 3 tanks in the platoon were single-turreted with cannons and 2 double-turreted with machine guns (the second type of organization was single-turreted: two single-turreted and one double-turreted tanks, but in 1939 the companies were quite mixed).

The number of tanks in the 121st company is questionable. According to the data, there were 16 regular tanks in it. Although the chief of staff of the 10th BC F. Skibinsky has always claimed that he has only 7-8 tanks. The brigade commander, Colonel St. Petersburg Macek, wrote in his memoirs: "It seems there are only 9."
