Glittered Cowboy Hat Magnets handcraft
For a fun treat on your refrigerator, how about one or two of these adorable glittered cowboy hat magnets? They also make a great gift idea when made as a set and placed in a decorative box!
For this project, you will need:
- Black cardstock
- Pencil
- Cowboy hat shaped stencil
- Craft knife
- Self healing mat
- Xyron machine fitted with a double-sided adhesive cartridge
- Shallow pan
- Black glitter (try to find glitter for sale in online stores)
- Hot glue gun and glue sticks
- Adhesive backed magnetic tape
- Scissors
- 1/4 inch white satin ribbon
- Newspaper
Due to the messiness of the glitter and glue, it is advised to first cover your work area with a few layers of newspaper prior to starting. Place the black cardstock flat on the work area. With a pencil, trace the cowboy hat shaped stencil image onto the paper. Create several more cowboy hat shapes to complete a set of magnets.
Place the black paper on the self healing mat. Cut out the cowboy hat images carefully with a craft knife. Run each of the cowboy hat designs through an Xyron machine fitted with a double-sided adhesive cartridge.
Peel the top layer of protective coating off the first cowboy hat shape. Set the shape into the shallow pan. Cut a small piece of 1/4 inch white satin ribbon. Adhere the ribbon in a "hat band" position with a small dot or two of hot glue.
Sprinkle liberally with black glitter. Shake off any excess glitter. One by one, remove the top layer of protective sheeting from each of the cowboy hat shapes and add glitter.
Cut a small strip of magnetic tape, big enough to fit on the back of the cowboy hat shape. Heat up the hot glue gun. Remove the protective sheeting from one of the cowboy hat shapes. Hot glue the magnet to the back of the cowboy hat shape. Repeat with the remaining glittered cowboy hat cutouts. Let the glue dry completely before using the magnet.
TIP: There is a wide variety of variation you could do with this project. Consider using bright colored cardstock or printed scrapbook paper for a feminine, retro, or even holiday theme. Also, consider using brighter colors of glitter for a varied effect. Bold reds, vibrant oranges, purples, fun pinks, deep greens and more would all look excellent. Use your imagination and be creative!
