Gabriel Jesus

Gabriel Jesus is a Brazilian professional footballer who plays as a forward for English club Manchester City and the Brazil national team. He is known for his speed, dribbling, and finishing.

Jesus began his career with Palmeiras, where he won the Copa do Brasil and the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A. In 2016, he moved to Manchester City for £27 million, becoming the most expensive Brazilian footballer ever. He won the Premier League and the League Cup in his first season with the club.

Jesus has represented Brazil at the 2016 Summer Olympics, winning a gold medal, and at the 2018 FIFA World Cup, where he was named the tournament's best young player.

Early Life

Gabriel Jesus was born in the city of São Paulo, Brazil, on 3 April 1997. He was raised in the Jardim Peri neighbourhood, and began playing football at an early age. His father, Gilberto, was a footballer who played for several clubs in Brazil, including Palmeiras and Corinthians. His mother, Vera Lúcia, is a homemaker. He has two older sisters, Fernanda and Cristiane.

Jesus began his career with local club Associação Atlética Anhanguera. In 2010, he moved to youth side Portuguesa Santista, where he spent two years before joining Palmeiras' academy in 2012.

Club career

Jesus made his professional debut for Palmeiras on 1 March 2015, coming on as a late substitute for Kleber in a 2–0 Campeonato Paulista away win against Linense. On 3 April, he scored his first professional goal in a 3–1 home win against Bragantino.

On 7 June 2015, Jesus made his Copa Libertadores debut, starting in a 2–2 home draw against River Plate. On 9 July, he scored his first Copa Libertadores goal in a 2–1 home win against Bolívar.

On 20 July 2015, Jesus scored his first Série A goal in a 2–1 home win against Atlético Mineiro. On 23 November, he scored a brace in a 3–1 home win against Vitória.

On 6 December 2015, Jesus won the Copa do Brasil with Palmeiras after defeating Santos 4–3 on penalties in the final. On 13 December, he was named the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A Player of the Month for November.

On 24 September 2016, Jesus scored twice in a 3–2 away win against Fluminense. On 2 October, he scored twice in a 5–1 home win against Atlético Paranaense.

On 22 October 2016, Jesus was named the Série A Player of the Month for September. On 26 November, he scored twice in a 5–3 home win against Grêmio.

On 11 December 2016, Jesus won the Série A championship with Palmeiras after they defeated Chapecoense 3–0 in the final. On 20 December, he was named the Série A Player of the Year.

Manchester City

On 3 August 2016, Jesus signed for English club Manchester City for a fee of £27 million, making him the most expensive Brazilian footballer ever. The fee could rise to £34 million with add-ons. He was given the number 33 shirt.

Jesus made his debut for Manchester City on 21 August 2016, coming on as a late substitute for Sergio Agüero in a 2–1 away win against Sunderland. On 10 September, he scored his first goal for the club in a 2–1 away win against Swansea City.

On 16 December 2017, Jesus was named as one of three finalists for the 2017 Golden Boy award. On 21 December, he was named as one of four nominees for the 2017 FIFA Puskás Award.

On 4 January 2018, Jesus was named as one of three finalists for the African Footballer of the Year award. On 11 January, he was named as one of three finalists for the BBC African Footballer of the Year award.

On 24 January 2018, Jesus was named as one of three finalists for the Ballon d'Or award. On 7 February, he won the African Footballer of the Year award.

International career

Jesus made his Brazil under-23 debut on 6 March 2015, scoring twice in a 3–0 friendly win against Honduras. On 25 March, he was named in Brazil's squad for the 2015 Toulon Tournament. He scored three goals in four appearances as Brazil won the tournament for the sixth time.

On 18 May 2015, Jesus was named in Brazil's squad for the 2015 Copa América. He made his senior debut on 14 June, coming on as a late substitute for Roberto Firmino in a 0–1 group stage loss to Peru. He made two further appearances as Brazil were eliminated in the quarter-finals by Paraguay on penalties.

On 28 March 2016, Jesus was named in Brazil's squad for the 2016 Summer Olympics. He scored three goals and provided two assists as Brazil won all seven of their matches to claim their first Olympic gold medal in football.

On 7 June 2018, Jesus was named in Brazil's squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. He made five appearances and scored two goals as Brazil reached the quarter-finals before being eliminated by Belgium 2–1 after extra time.
