About the Artists
Red Hawk Native American Dancers: Since 1993, the Redhawk Native American Arts Council’s performing artists have been sharing Native American dance, music, art and history with audiences around the world. Their programs entertain, educate and foster a positive image of our nation’s first culture. By combining live singing and drumming with traditional dances, social dances, and verbal interpretation, we are able to create high energy, exciting programs. Redhawk’s dance troupe members are not just performers but Native American artists and educators, who have spent their lives learning cultural traditions and history from family members and tribal elders.
Peruinca Folk: Rosa Carhuallanqui was born in Huancayo Peru, and obtained degrees in anthropology and teaching on her way to working for the Peruvian Ministry of Education as part of a national pilot project to include folklore in its educational system. After emigrating to the United States, Rosa founded the Peruincafolk company, which presents the dances of Peru’s coast, mountains and amazon. In addition to performing, Rosa is a gifted educator, and has been recognized in 2005 by el Diario La Prensa of New York and in 2013 by Community Works NY for her outstanding achievements bringing dance education to NYC children.
The Japanese Folk Dance Institute of N.Y. Inc. was formed by Momo Suzuki in 1992 to research, promote, and keep alive interest in the traditional folk dances of Japan. We especially focus on those authentic dances performed by the ordinary working people of Japan. To us, it is dance with the sweat and sweetness of life itself! Presently, the Japanese Folk Dance Institute consists of two performing groups; Minbuza, a professional group, and Hanagasa kai (Flower Hat Dance Group), an open group of all ages and nationalities, which performs and parades the Bon-Odori at festivals and other events.
Saung Budaya Indonesian Dance Group was established in 2005 by dance instructor Amalia Suryani, and with the support of the Indonesian Consulate General, is now a vital part of the Indonesian community in New York. Saung Budaya’s goal is to introduce Indonesia’s culture through dance and music to the Indonesian-American youth residing in New York City and more generally to the wider public. A variety of dances from all over the Indonesian archipelago are taught within the group, which has performed not only around New York City but also around the tri-state area.
