Dixon Place Hosts: Thicket Created by Aleah Black
About The show
Thicket is a queer story of two siblings. A brother and sister run away to the woods, where they meet foxes and demons and farmers and something stranger still. Follow them as they learn to navigate what it means to love each other. Thicket is a lush and absurd fairytale world, inhabited by humans, musicians, and puppet creatures alike. Thicket is appropriate for age 10+.
Aleah Black is an artist, teacher, and fool in Brooklyn, New York. Aleah is a prolific poet through their beloved internet persona, Gendersauce. Their more recent playwriting work includes How To Eat The Thing That Eats You and the various pageants and stories they have created for their elementary school students. Aleah was a puppetry apprentice with Amy Trompetter; they create puppets of many kinds, from tabletop puppetry to paper mâché masks. Aleah began work on Thicket pre-pandemic, has carried this show through years of global plague, and is overjoyed to be bringing it to Dixon Place.
“This show was entirely funded by community fundraising efforts. We have no corporate donors, sponsors, or organizations backing our work. We believe in making art that is accessible for the people and fairly pays our amazing artists. If you have a little more to give, spend more on your ticket! You’ll be subsidizing the ticket of someone who is also worthy of seeing live art and who needs to pay a little less. Thank you for supporting our show! -the team of Thicket”
