Featuring an all-female cast of New York City-based artists, immerse yourself in Dickinson’s web of words through the music of Heggie, Harbach, Copland, Walker, Barber, Hall, Carter and more. With Nora Bartosik at the piano, take a journey through Dickinson’s body of work as we unleash the strength that comes when women are fully free to express themselves.

Pianist Nora Bartosikhas performed as a soloist and in chamber ensembles in the United States, Germany, Austria, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, South Korea, Spain, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. She is a prizewinner of international competitions and has appeared in international festivals including the Aspen Music Festival and School, the Saoû Chante Mozart Festival in Saoû, France and the HARMOS Festival in Porto, Portugal. She has performed in masterclasses with pianists including Daniel Barenboim, Leon Fleisher, and Menahem Pressler. She holds degrees from Harvard University, the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria, and the University of Music in Leipzig, Germany.
Rachel Deatherageis a mezzo-soprano residing in NYC. Her previous performances have included roles with Cinnabar Theatre, New York Opera Forum, and Opera NEO. A few of her favorites include: Prince Orlovsky, Carmen, and that one time she portrayed Sarah Palin. Earlier this season she performed Smeton opposite New Camarata Opera’s Alexandra Lang as Anna Bolena and this summer at Opera NEO she will perform Clo-Clo in Lehár’s The Merry Widow and cover Idamante in Mozart’s Idomeneo. Rachel is delighted to add her voice to this evening dedicated to Emily Dickinson’s work.
Coloratura soprano Jane Hoffman brings an engaging stage presence and expressive voice to a variety of repertoire. She has performed with the Victor Herbert Renaissance Project Live, Pasadena Opera, OperaRox Productions, Utopia Opera, and the Emerald City Opera Artist Institute. Her notable roles performed include Elizabeth ‘Baby Doe’ Tabor, Adele, Olympia, and Le Feu. Jane is a Core Company Resident with Fresh Squeezed Opera Company, and a member of chamber music duo Reed & Word. She holds degrees from Sarah Lawrence College and the Manhattan School of Music, and is a student of David Jones. www.janehoffmansoprano.com
Mezzo-soprano Sophia Huntis in her third year at the Curtis Institute of Music, where she holds the Hirsig Family Fellowship and studies with Dr. Sherry Overholt. This season, Sophia sings Geneviève in Impressions of Pelléas, Larina in Eugene Onegin, and Susie in A Quiet Place with the Curtis Opera Theatre, followed by 1st Trio Member in Trouble in Tahiti at the Aspen Music Festival. Sophia was selected as a participant in the October 2016 Joyce DiDonato master classes at Carnegie Hall. She has also attended Houston Grand Opera’s Young Artists Vocal Academy, SongFest, and the Westchester Summer Vocal Institute.
Nicole Leone, soprano, has performed operatic roles including Ellen Olenska in the New York City premiere of the new opera, The Age of Innocence, Zerlina in Don Giovanni, Arminda in La Finta Giardiniera, Barbarina in Le Nozze di Figaro, Annina in La Traviata, Don Ettore in La Canterina, Olga in The Merry Widow, and Una Conversa in Suor Angelica. In concert, she has performed as soprano soloist in Brahms’ Ein deutsches Requiem, Schubert’s Mass in G and Bach Cantata No. 140 with the Astoria Choir in New York. Ms. Leone holds a M.M. in Voice Performance from Temple University and a B.A. in Economics from New York University. She currently studies with Randi Marrazzo and resides in New York City.
Max Potteris a dynamic artist whose experience allows her to successfully perform a wide variety of repertoire. Previous engagements include making her role debut as Donna Elvira in Mozart’s Don Giovanni at The Sheen Center in Manhattan, and covering the role of Sister Helen Prejean in Dead Man Walking with Des Moines Metro Opera. She was a featured soloist for multiple summers with the Aspen Opera Theater Center, and is an alumna of the renowned Des Moines Metro Opera Apprentice Program, the International Vocal Arts Institute, and the esteemed CoOPERAtive Program. Max is a recipient of awards from the Metropolitan Opera National Council, The Young Musicians Foundation, and The CoOPERAtive Program. In 2017 Max was a semi-finalist for The Paris Opera Competition and the Premiere Opera International Vocal Competition. She has been featured as a soloist at the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts and the Washington National Cathedral.
Kirsten Scotthas been described as a “creamy toned mezzo-soprano with charm to burn.” She has sung throughout the U.S. as well as abroad in Austria, France, and Italy. After earning a B.A. at Wellesley College followed by a masters in music from Mannes College, she was a district winner of the Metropolitan Opera’s Eastern Region National Council Auditions. She was selected by Florida Grand Opera for its young artist program, and The Portland Opera Resident Artist Program. She made her professional debut with the Florida Grand Opera as Vera Boronel in Menotti’s The Consul. This March 2018 she made her Carnegie Hall debut as a soloist with Choirs of America. She has performed at Lincoln Center’s Rose Theater, Boston’s Jordan Hall and The Kennedy Library, The New York Supreme Court, Merkin Hall in NYC, The National Opera Center, the Adrienne Arsht Center in Miami, the Metropolitan Opera Guild, and Harris Hall for the Aspen Summer Music Festival. She was featured as an artist on WQXR’s Young Artist Showcase. In 2011, she was the lead soloist in the world premiere of the oratorio Illuminessence, composed for the decennial commemoration of 9/11, performed in Boston’s iconic Jordan Hall. An acclaimed singing actress, Elisabeth Slatensang the title role of Cio Cio San (cover) in Puccini’s Madama Butterfly this past summer as a Resident Artist with Opera North(NH). She made her New York City debut in 2017 with Bronx Opera singing Meg Page in Vaughan Williams’ Sir John in Love. Recent roles include Musetta (La bohème), Suzel (L’amico Fritz), Gretel (Hansel and Gretel), Adina (L’elisir d’amore), Antonia (Les contes d’Hoffmann), and Pamina (Die Zauberflöte). An avid concert artist, Ms. Slaten joined the Venice Symphony last spring, under the baton of Maestro Imre Pallo, to sing the soprano solo in Poulenc’s Gloria . Ms. Slaten earned her Masters of Music Peabody Conservatory and her Doctorate from the University of Georgia under a full assistantship.
Devony Smithis a versatile soprano excelling in both contemporary and traditional repertoire with her “sensuous” and “strong” voice (New York Times). Ms. Smith makes her mark on New York City as a professional member of Musica Viva NY, where she recently performed Ernest Chausson’s “Chanson Perpetuelle” with the Aeolus Quartet, and the soprano solos for Carmina Burana, Vivaldi’s Gloria, and Brahms’ Ein Deutsches Requiem. Smith spent her summer in fellowships at both Songfest in Los Angeles and Ravinia Steans Music Institute. This year, Devony performed the remount of Kate Soper’s self-accompanied opera Here Be Sirens at National Sawdust, and participated in Marilyn Horne’s Song Continues Workshop at Carnegie Hall.
