Dixon Place and Research Foundation to Cure Aids (RFTCA) Present: Stonewall (1995)

About The Film

The feature film Stonewall (1995) stars Duane Boutté, Brendan Corbalis, Guillermo Diaz, David Drumgold, Bruce MacVittie, Michael McElroy and Frederick Weller in a fictional account of events leading to the legendary uprisings that began at the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village on June 28, 1969, and continued for five nights. Using a blend of truth and musical fantasy, it recreates the conditions and atmosphere that gave rise to the riots; a landmark event in the advancement of LGBTQ+ rights.

Shot in NYC in 1994, the screenplay by British actor/writer Rikki Beadle Blair is inspired by a book of the same name by American historian and activist Martin Duberman. The film’s director, Nigel Finch (The Lost Language of Cranes), died of AIDS in 1995 during post-production. Stonewall was produced by Christine Vachon and Killer Films, a top indie film house in NYC. (Killer Films was the first to pledge to leave Georgia following that state’s new repressive abortion laws.) The film was released theatrically in the U.S. and abroad in 1995 after favorable reception at Cannes and Sundance, winning awards at festivals in London, San Francisco, and Los Angeles.

The screening will be introduced by Killer Films co-founder Christine Vachon. Post-screening panelists include cast members Duane Boutté, Bruce MacVittie, Michael McElroy and David Drumgold, as well as international performance artist Penny Arcade; activist and Stonewall survivor Jim Fouratt; producer/director of the 4-part PBS program Positive Life with HIV Calogero Salvo, and RFTCA President Kambiz Shekdar.

RESEARCH FOUNDATION TO CURE AIDS

Dixon Place is co-presenting the screening with RFTCA, a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization founded to develop a cure for AIDS that is accessible and affordable for all. In 2019, RFTCA obtained a perpetual worldwide license to cellular technology to research, develop and commercialize a cure for AIDS, making it the first and only charitable biotechnology venture to cure AIDS. The law firm Morrison & Foerster LLP and advertising agency Havas Health Plus represent RFTCA on a pro bono basis, and its Board of Directors includes scientists affiliated with The Rockefeller University.
