About This Show
Songs from a new musical, performed by book writer/lyricist Kirya Traber, arrangements by composer/lyricist Sissi Liu. If This Be Sin is based on the life of the openly queer Harlem Renaissance entertainer, Gladys Bentley, spanning from Bentley’s formidable ascent to fame and riotous queer resistance in the midst of the racial and sexual revolution in the 1930s, to her tumultuous choice to eventually conform become a ‘good christian wife in the 1950s. Kirya and friends will share a few songs from the show, which will have a workshop production as a part of HI-ARTS Critical Breaks Residency series, in Spring 2020.
About the Artists
Kirya Traber is a nationally awarded playwright and performer. She is an Artist in Residence with Lincoln Center Education, a co-host of First Person PBS, and her musical, If This Be Sin, will be a part of HI-ARTS Critical Breaks Residency series, in Spring 2020. She is the recipient of Robert Redford’s Sundance Foundation award for Activism in the Arts, and an Astrea Foundation Award for Poetry.
Sissi Liu has been a visiting artist-scholar at Brown University since she earned her Ph.D. in Theatre and Performance at The Graduate Center, City University of New York in 2018. Her work as a theatre and music practitioner has been seen in venues such as Carnegie Hall, PS122, Primary Stages, Briggs Opera House, and The Juilliard School, where she was trained in composition and orchestration.
