Shield the Joyous Works by Aleksandr Frolov, Gabrielle Revlock, Alexandra Tatarsky

About This Show

In Fall 2019 Aleksandr Frolov, Gabrielle Revlock and Alexandra Tatarsky will present a new collaboration, Exposure Therapy — an embodied, creative, and personal response to anxiety and the language of anxiety research. To commence this collaboration between two Americans and one Russian, this evening is devoted to showing an exploration from each artist, which will then inform the forthcoming piece. Come experience these distinctive voices in contemporary performance and get a sneak peek into the creative process.

Shield the Joyous is made possible in part with public funds from Creative Engagement, supported by the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council and the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and administered by LMCC.

About the Artists

Gabrielle Revlock is an award-winning dance-maker known for her  “inventive”, “rambunctious”, and “mesmerizing” choreography. Presenters include ADF, Gibney, FringeArts, NYLA. Internationally she has performed in Japan, Netherlands, Singapore, Hungary, Russia. Her work has been supported by Pew Center for Arts & Heritage, Independence Foundation, PA Council on the Arts, Puffin Foundation and the US Department of State. As a dancer, she has performed for Lucinda Childs, Vicky Shick, Susan Rethorst, and Jane Comfort. Check out So You Think You Can’t Understand Contemporary Dance?, a two-minute conversation with her favorite five-year-old.

Aleksandr Frolov is a contemporary dancer/choreographer based in Yekaterinburg, Russia. He graduated with a degree from the Liberal Arts University of Yekaterinburg and started the duet company Zonk’a with Anna Shchekleina. His work has been presented in USA, France, Finland, and throughout Russia. His was winner of IX All-Russia Festival of Modern Dance and 3 times nominated for a Golden Mask, the most prestigious award for performance in Russia. In 2014 he was a resident artist at Art Omi in NY state and in 2012 he was invited to ADF for the International Choreographers Residency. He has been a dancer with Provincial Dances Theatre (Russia) and S’poart (France).

Alexandra Tatarsky makes performances at the unfortunate in-between zone of dance, comedy, performance art, theater, and deluded rant — sometimes with songs. Venues include Brooklyn Museum, CPR, La Mama ETC, MoMA PS1, New Museum, PSNY, The Kitchen, Howl!, Gibney, and Judson Church. Writings on spambot poetry, shanzhai lyrics, and grotesque politics appear in publications including New Inquiry, Hypocrite Reader, ArtReview Asia, Garlands, Spike, and Folder. Tatarsky’s work seeks the logic of the clown as an antidote to despair and a model of one who keeps trying despite (repeated) failure. @tartar.biz / @shanzhai_lyric
