She will say too much. She will show too much. She will be too much. But it will not be enough. Through a series of articulated and embodied statements choreographer Steinunn Ketilsdóttir attempts to express her expectations of a performance and the performer, concurrently questioning those very expectations. She has a whole lot of expectations for this project; what it will be, what it should be, what it might, and what it might not be! In OVERSTATEMENT/OVERSTEINUNN: Expressions of Expectations, she will express herself. She will make statements. Expect nothing. Expect anything. Expect something.

Rejected Thoughts

As friends and collaborators, Mira and Irina would meet to investigate what makes them vulnerable, joyous or angry. A lot of what came out were ‘‘rejected thoughts’’, things they care about or that are integral parts of themselves but which they would often dismiss or deny. They brought in their personal fascinations too – convenient intimacy, DNA, a speculum, old family photos from Siberia… They will share an excerpt from what is emerging out of all of this.
about the artists
Steinunn Ketilsdóttir is an Icelandic choreographer currently living in New York, who just finished her MA in Performance Studies at NYU. She graduated with a BA in dance from Hunter College in NY in 2005. She sometimes works alone on solo and group work and sometimes with others. She enjoys working with her good friend and longtime collaborator Brian Gerke. She also collaborates with Icelandic choreographer Sveinbjörg Þórhallsdóttir with whom she shares a deep interest in feminist matters.
Mira Treatman is a dancer. Her work has been presented at Sandy Spring Museum and Goldilocks Gallery. She has performed in the work of Sylvain Emard, Cie. Carabosse/Teatro Linea de Sombra and Renee Archibald. She is is an alum of Beloit College and Headlong Performance Institute.
Irina Varina comes from a filmmaking/acting background. She made and performed in a dozen short films. For the past two years, she’s been most passionate about dance and theater and is a graduate of Headlong Performance Institute. In her work, she seeks to convey life experiences that are sometimes hard to put into words or seem too shameful.
