In the Lounge Harry Smith at the Chelsea Hotel Terese Coe
About This Show
Harry Smith at the Chelsea Hotel is a biographical play set in 1970 about Harry Smith, the artist, filmmaker, wit, polymath, collector, self-styled shaman, Guggenheim grantee, and producer of the influential American Anthology of Folk Music. Harry often invites friends, artists, and potential patrons to his room, where he plays Brecht-Weill’s Mahagonny on a small box record player. H was often in need of funds to continue shooting his NYC version of the opera. One night he invites a millionaire/potential benefactor to see his paintings, and finds it necessary to warn the “regulars” to behave themselves.
About the Artists
Cain Perry (Harry Smith): Since his portrayal of Harry Smith with the Red Harlem Readers some years ago, Cain has been involved with several film and theater projects, his most recent being ‘Fauna,’ a fun action adventure/horror film that will premiere in spring 2020. Currently he is studying under the tutelage of Caymichael Patten.
Alicia Buxton (Gwinn) is an actor, singer, model, and burlesque performer based in Brooklyn. She currently appears as lead femme fatale in ‘Wicked City Blues’ at the Actor’s Temple Theatre. Recent roles include Lady Viola Galloway (‘Through the Wren’); Whitney in ‘Vulcanalia: Creator/Destroyer’ (Winner, Best Play at Manhattan Rep Theatre 2018); and Columbia in Coney Island’s ‘Rocky Horror Show.’ She wrote, sang, and produced ‘Temptress!’ a cabaret show to debut at October’s Scranton Fringe Festival.
Timothy Mullins (Bix) was born in Hollywood, California, served on the USS Enterprise, has an engineering degree, and spent some time working for the DoD. He has discovered that show tunes, Sinatra, and performing with fellow artists are much preferred to designing weapons platforms! Enjoy the show!
Cordis Heard (Peggy) joined Richard Gaffield and Laurence Holder in establishing the Red Harlem Readers in 2007. She has produced at least one very interesting Sunday afternoon each month, and is a veteran of the theater, starting with Paul Sills and The Story Theater in Chicago. Cordis has appeared on Broadway and Off as well as in Regional Theater, plus lots of TV and movies.
