GODDESS 2.0 Michelle Sui

About This Show

GODDESS 2.0 is a new experimental opera rewriting the 1934 Chinese silent film The Goddess, whose provocative star Ruan Lingyu suffered a tragic fate similar to that of her onscreen character. With original music, interactive media, and an irreverent dissection of time and space, director Michelle Sui presents a new history of women shifting between roles in art and reality.

About Artist

Michelle Sui is an interdisciplinary artist and performer born in China and raised in the US. Combining theatre, music, dance, film, and new media, her compositions draw heavily from memory, geography, language in translation, and the landscapes of body and femininity. Her recent Fassbinder-inspired chamber opera amur premiered in New York to sold-out audiences and has upcoming performances in Berlin and Istanbul. She is a graduate of the Experimental Theatre Wing at NYU/Tisch School of the Arts.
