Equinox/Solstice LAVA

About This Show

LAVA presents a new work, Equinox/Solstice, that has emerged from a year of residencies around the solstices and equinoxes, among the trees, along the river, and accompanied by local fauna of Upstate New York.  With 6 new company members including our newest and youngest, 3 year old Annikki Chanoff, this new work invites us into a tale of finding what was lost, reclaiming the power and intimacy of women working and playing together, and honoring the mysteries and beauties of our yonis, the season’s cycles, and our courageous hearts.  With acrobatics inspired by plate tectonics and choreography derived from migration patterns and plant locomotion, LAVA delivers a work that promises to be inspiring, uplifting, and welcoming to all.

About the artist

Founded by Sarah East Johnson in 2000, LAVA’s feminist acrobatic dance has become known for an explosive choreographic language that pushes the accepted boundaries of dance and gender while celebrating radical connections and the beauty of equality and balance. The 13-member company works collaboratively to create works that are inspired by nature and celebrate the beauty of empowerment and cooperation.  The OBIE and Bessie award winning LAVA has performed in NYC venues including The Kitchen, PS 122, BAM, The Flea Theater, Dixon Place, New York Live Arts, Celebrate Brooklyn!, Symphony Space, BRIC Studio, Central Park Summerstage, the Brooklyn Lyceum, and the New Victory Theater. The company has performed in Massachusetts, New York, Vermont, Michigan, New Orleans, New Mexico, and internationally in Australia and Argentina.   Collaborators include Toshi Reagon, DJ Tikka Masala, Barbara Gogan, Claudia Brown, and Nehemiah Luckett.
