MAINSTAGE Beyond This Place Talen Piner

About This Show

In 1958, 18-year-old Paul Bethul lives with his single Mother in the seaside town of Half Moon Bay, California; just 30 miles south of San Francisco. Paul has been raised sheltered, religious, pious; only knowing the likes of Stanford University and Our Lady of the Pillar, their local Catholic Church.

When Paul is asked by a professor at Stanford to apply for an internship, he needs to show proof of citizenship; i.e. a birth certificate.

Never seen it, Paul asks his Mother for the paper. She refuses.
What happens next will change his life forever as he ventures…

PRODUCTION CREW
Book, Music & Lyrics – Talen Piner (he/him)
An aspiring new composer/writer, Talen wrote his first musical, Scouts, in early-pandemic, along with his friend, Caitlyn Joyce. After a staged reading of Scouts last summer, Talen wanted his next piece to be his own. Something from the heart. As if fate, he stumbled on the 1950 novel Beyond This Place by A.J. Cronin in the corner of a flea market in Pasadena. Immediately intrigued by the premise, Talen began the process. Though more of an inspiration than an adaptation, this new musical is one of self-discovery, forgiveness, and belief in the journey. He is grateful for his friends and chosen family here in NYC for giving their talents to help put up this reading, as well as always being by his side even in the worst of times. Talen wants this story to take you to a place of hope; to somewhere far Beyond This Place.

Daniel Gittler was most recently the Associate Conductor and keyboard player for the national tour of WAITRESS; he made his Broadway debut as a substitute musician with the show.
