In the Lounge Bethlehem Sans Comedia
About This Show
The only inn in Bethlehem is full. A Samaritan prostitute is plotting her escape with a Roman census-taker, much to the dismay of the tax collector who loves her. One of the innkeepers is trying to get into the Saturnalia spirit with her friend, the fig-loving fanatic, while her partner fumes at idea of a freeloading couple sleeping in the manger. That couple will change the course of Western history forever when, as the Star of Bethlehem rises in the sky, their son is born. You know their names already—now it’s time to get acquainted with the characters who didn’t make it into the Gospels. The clash of cultures in Roman-occupied Judea come to life in song and in speech, in English and in Spanish. This special one-night only Bingo Lounge performance features a selection of scenes and songs from the show, coming this Christmas.
Developed with a BAX Space Grant and with the Brooklyn Generator collective.
About the Artists
Sans Comedia is a bilingual company presenting work across transcontinental lines. The company proposes a new kind of cruelty—a skeptical examination of the fabric of what got us where we are today: history, culture, and the pride of the self-assured. As founder and creator of Sans Comedia, Julian Mesri has made theatre and art in the US and South America for 10 years in both traditional and nontraditional spaces, creating a simplified yet urgent aesthetic meant to engage and challenge both audience and form. Recent work includes Immersion (The Treehouse Theater), Lisa and Her Things (The Peoples Improv Theater, Intar Residency), and Oedipus Gol (Stone Creek). This marks our first foray into musical theater.
