Here's what the Press has to say about Lynn Neuman and her work:
"Its magic on the audience was that you were afraid to look and afraid
to look away!"
~ Madeline Dale, Attitude: The Dancer's Magazine
"A powerful and original movement style loaded with substance and impact."
~ Deni Kasrel, Philadelphia City Paper
"Musical, brave and inclined to gamble." ~Elizabeth Zimmer, Village Voice
In a world of conditioned responses, where messages of fear and uncertainty prevail, what is the role of instinct? If you see something is a familiar phrase to all New Yorkers. But what does it accomplish and how does it and similar messages affect our daily lives? This quartet explores the contradictions between the physical reflexes, gut reactions, and enculturated responses that are normal in our society. The movement vocabulary juxtaposes mounting anxiety with passivity, shocking jolts with paralysis. Themes of manipulation and exploitation emerge in this salient and strident work.
Lynn Neuman is Artistic Director and co-founder of Artichoke Dance Company. Her work uses irony and humor to examine dysfunctional aspects of society and relationships. Her movement style is an outgrowth of a background in gymnastics combined with eclectic dance training, including studies in Balinese dance, tango, and contact improvisation. New York seasons include the Danspace Project at St. Mark's Church, the Joyce SoHo, the American Theatre of Actors, the Ohio Theater, University Settlement and Fringe NYC, the Philadelphia Fringe Festival, and the Piccolo Spoleto Festival in Charleston, SC. Ms. Neuman's work has been supported by several grants from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council and the Puffin Foundation as well as funding from the Brooklyn and Manhattan Presidents' Offices and Altria Group, Inc. with additional support from R.R. Donnelly Financial. Residencies include Art Omi International Dance Collective and White Oak Plantation. She has a BFA degree from the University of Michigan and MFA from Temple University.
