"too much fun to miss..." - The New York Times

Using nuance, virtuosity and clumsiness to create theatrical, intimate dances rich with surprise; performing in venues ranging from traditional theaters, international festivals, and universities to hillsides, hallways and public fountains, Monica Bill Barnes is committed to making and bringing dances into popular culture. Her pallet of work ranges from an extensive solo repertory and evening length duets to large group installations and community projects, showcasing a unique pick-up company of twenty performers, ranging in age from 11 to 80.

Barnes moved to New York City to earn her MFA from NYU, Tisch School of the Arts in 1997 on a graduate fellowship. Since then, her work has been presented in New York City (Danspace Project, Dance Theater Workshop, Dancing in the Streets, Symphony Space, Dancenow/NYC, Dixon Place and Movement Research @ Judson Church) throughout the United States, and internationally in Russia, Germany, Spain, Mexico, Switzerland and Australia. Barnes has created eleven evening length works, as well as numerous commissions for universities and dance companies. Her work has been praised as "comic delight the solo made perfect sense as a zany, purely physical response to the music" (New York Times), "zippy and understated magic which specializes in comic gangliness" (The New Yorker), and "better than a bra burning, this is unapologetic, inclusive, baseline feminism" (Dance Insider). Barnes, herself has been described as "the blithe maiden of decades-ago dance, but with kinks where charm and discomfort duke it out" (The Village Voice) and "a magic to her presence Ms. Barnes was extraordinary-her masterful face adds a whole other level of theatricality and meaning to her performance" (Gay City News).

In the past, Barnes has been supported by Greenwall Foundation (2004, 2005) Bossak/Heilbron Charitable Foundation (2002, 2003, 2005) and the Puffin Foundation (1999, 2001, 2005). She is currently an artist in residence 2004-2005 at The Joyce Theater. Her site-specific work, Limelight was presented this summer through Lower Manhattan Cultural Council's SITELINES festival (June 27-July1) and a new evening length work Thank You and Goodnight was premiered at the Philadelphia Live Arts Festival in September.

This Dixon Place Mondo Cane! commission is made possible with generous support from New York State Council on the Arts - a state agency, Jerome Foundation, Andrew Mellon Foundation, Mertz Gilmore Foundation, Peg Santvoord Foundation, and Lucille Lortel Foundation. This program is also made possible in part through the sponsorship of The Field, with funding provided by Greenwall Foundation and Bossak/Heilbron Charitable Foundation, and a residency provided by The Joyce Theater Foundation, NYC, with major support from Andrew W.
